What Does 25g of Protein Cost? The Honest Comparison: Chicken, Quark, Eggs, Whey & Clear Whey

Was kostet 25 g Protein? Der große Vergleich: Hähnchen, Quark, Eier, Whey & Clear Whey

Not all protein is created equal. And it doesn't have to be expensive either. But what do you really pay per serving? We've done the math. Chicken, skimmed quark, eggs, conventional whey and Clear Whey in a direct comparison. The results are surprising.

Why "per gram of protein" is the only fair comparison metric

Most people compare protein sources by the price per kilogram. Chicken breast costs 12 Euros per kilo, whey protein 30 Euros. So chicken is cheaper. Right?

Wrong. Because 1 kg of chicken breast is not 1 kg of protein. It's about 230 g of protein; the rest is water and connective tissue. What really matters is the price per 25 g of protein. This is a standard serving that your body can optimally utilize per meal. And only when you calculate all sources down to this unit do you see what you're really paying for.

That's exactly what we did. For the five most popular protein sources in Germany. With current supermarket prices.

The big comparison: What do 25 g of protein cost?

Chicken Breast

~€1.20 per 25 g protein

Chicken breast costs an average of €10 to €12 per kilo in the supermarket. For 25 g of protein, you need about 110 g of meat. That sounds cheap at first.

But: You have to buy it, store it, season it, cook it, and wash up. Factor in the time you spend on this every week. Plus: Chicken breast lasts 2 to 3 days in the fridge. If you forget about it, it ends up in the bin. And then it wasn't so cheap after all.

High-quality protein Satiating Cooking time Perishable Gets monotonous quickly

Skimmed Quark

~€0.37 per 25 g protein

The price king. 500 g of skimmed quark costs around €0.89 and provides about 60 g of protein. For 25 g of protein, you need about 210 g. That's unbeatable value.

But: Eating 210 g of plain skimmed quark? Every day? Nobody can do that long-term. The taste is at best neutral, the consistency tough. Plus, there are around 80 kcal per serving and a certain amount of milk sugar, which causes digestive problems for many people.

Very inexpensive Widely available Taste Lactose Large quantity needed

Eggs

~€0.90 per 25 g protein

10 free-range eggs cost around €2.49. One egg provides about 7 g of protein. For 25 g, you therefore need almost 4 eggs. That makes about €0.90 per serving.

Eggs are versatile and delicious. But again: You have to boil or fry them. 4 eggs per meal, several times a week, eventually gets monotonous. And depending on the preparation method, extra calories quickly add up from oil or butter.

Versatile Good nutrient density Preparation needed Additional calories from fat

Conventional Whey Protein

~€0.80 to €1.10 per 25 g protein

One kilogram of whey concentrate costs an average of €25 to €35 and provides about 33 servings with 24 g of protein each. This works out to €0.76 to €1.06 per serving.

Solid in terms of price. But many people know the downsides: heavy, creamy consistency, bloating due to lactose, milky aftertaste. In summer, hardly anyone wants to drink a thick chocolate shake. And the cheapest products on the market often skimp on raw material quality.

Good price per serving Quick preparation Heavy on the stomach Lactose/bloating Quality varies greatly

Clear Whey (Subscription) ★ ~€1.00 to €1.05 30 sec. 0.2 g

Why the pure price doesn't tell the whole story

Yes, skimmed quark is cheaper per gram of protein. There's no arguing with that. But price isn't everything. What the table doesn't show:

Time commitment. Frying chicken takes you 20 minutes per serving. Boiling and peeling eggs also takes 10 minutes. Clear Whey? 30 seconds. Add water, shake, drink. If you replace one meal three times a week with a shake, you save several hours of cooking time over a month.

Shelf life. Chicken lasts 2 to 3 days in the fridge. Skimmed quark for a week. Eggs a little longer. Clear Whey sits in the cupboard for months and is always ready. No waste, no spoilage, no "I forgot to buy groceries."

Macro profile. With Clear Whey, you get 24.8 g of protein with 103 kcal, almost 0 g of sugar, and less than 0.1 g of fat. No other food provides such a pure protein-to-calorie ratio. Skimmed quark comes close but contains milk sugar. Eggs have fat. Chicken too, depending on preparation.

Digestibility. Clear Whey is based on whey isolate. Almost lactose-free, almost fat-free. No feeling of heaviness, no bloating, no full stomach after training.

Conclusion: The cheapest option per gram of protein is and remains skimmed quark. But the best balance of price, convenience, taste, macros, and digestibility? That's Clear Whey. Especially with a subscription.

Example calculation: You drink one shake a day. With the subscription, that costs you around €31.50 per month. For that, you get 25 g of protein every day, almost 0 g of sugar, less than 0.1 g of fat. That's cheaper than a coffee-to-go per day.

What "good protein" really means

In the end, it's not just about what's cheapest. It's about what you actually stick to every day. The cheapest protein won't help you if you can't stand the sight of skimmed quark after two weeks. Or if you don't feel like frying chicken after work in the evening.

Good protein is what you consistently consume. Day after day. Without excuses, without effort, without it feeling like an obligation.

And this is exactly where the strength of Clear Whey lies. It's not the cheapest per gram. But it's what most people actually stick with in the long run. Because it tastes good, because it's quick, and because it doesn't feel like a supplement, but like a drink you enjoy.

If you want to optimize your costs even further, the subscription is the smartest way. You'll end up at a price level comparable to chicken breast and eggs. Without cooking, without shopping, without spoilage. Your protein arrives automatically every month. You don't have to think about it.
